Matthew Black

Matthew Black is associate director of bands and director of percussion at Carmel High School in Carmel Indiana. Carmel High School is nationally renowned in all facets of its fine arts program. In 2023 the Carmel High School Percussion Ensemble performed as a feature ensemble at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic under Matthew Black’s direction.

Matthew graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in music education.

He was the soundscape designer for the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps in 2020. Matt has spent time on the educational staff of Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps, Veritas Indoor Percussion Ensemble, and Cavaliers Indoor Percussion Ensemble. He served as the percussion director at 7-time Grand National Champion Marian Catholic High School from 2014-2019.

He has presented clinics across the country, speaking on percussion pedagogy, sound reinforcement, and sound design for the pageantry arts. He is also a frequent present on electronic music production for Ableton

Live.

Matthew is a Yamaha Performing Artist. He also endorses Evans drumheads, Innovative Percussion sticks and implements, and Zildjian cymbals.

He currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife Amy, daughter Julia, and their dogs Lydian and Hank.
