Developing Leaders On And Off The Field

The Cavaliers Empower Members Through Personal and Professional Development Training

As we wrap up our intensive Spring Training and prepare to embark on our highly anticipated summer tour, we take pride in announcing the successful completion of two transformative training programs: the DiSC Workplace® Profile and Cooperation & Change seminars. These initiatives, attended by the corps' 165 members, board of directors, instructional staff, and management, demonstrate The Cavaliers Arts, Performance & Education, Inc.’s commitment to fostering personal growth, professional development, and long-lasting skills beyond the drum corps season.

The idea to incorporate personal and professional development training into our drum corps curriculum was driven and executed by CAP&E Board Vice President Dale Young. These valuable and fun sessions were hosted by Barbara Bolender, CAP&E Board Member and seasoned Human Resources professional with The Simmons Group. The DiSC Workplace® Profile training, based on Marston's theory of behavioral psychology, provided participants with valuable insights into their communication styles, personal behaviors, and areas of improvement. Through engaging discussions and interactive exercises, participants gained a deep understanding of their strengths and learned how to contribute effectively to the success of the team. The training also emphasized the importance of enhancing leadership skills, building stronger relationships, and effectively managing conflicts. The highlight of this program was the "Oh Shoot" activity, which challenged groups of approximately 15 individuals to pass a ball through everyone's hand in one second or less, fostering teamwork and effective communication. Members enjoyed this activity so much that a subtle “Oh Shoot” audible was implemented into show run-throughs in the following weeks of rehearsal!

In addition to the DiSC Workplace® Profile, The Cavaliers embraced the Cooperation & Change seminar, which offered participants the opportunity to simulate the role of planetary leaders. This dynamic and interactive exercise enabled corps members, directors, staff, and management to understand the challenges that arise when competition among team members hinders overall organizational goals and teamwork. By identifying barriers, behaviors, and strengths that impact organizational effectiveness, participants acquired vital skills in navigating change readiness, providing coaching and support, and seizing individual opportunities for personal growth.

"Through these comprehensive training programs, we are empowering our members and staff to excel not only within the drum corps but also in their future endeavors," stated Monte Mast, Executive Director of CAP&E. "We are committed to nurturing an inclusive and supportive environment that develops our members professionally and equips them with valuable lifelong skills. The DiSC Workplace Profile and Cooperation & Change seminars represent our dedication to personal growth, effective teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence."

The Cavaliers move forward into the touring season having cultivated an environment of personal and professional development across corps membership and staff, and look forward to implementing their newfound leadership and collaboration skills during tour and beyond.
