FRED OLIN
2023 AD LEGACY AWARD WINNER
Nomination Letter:
As we celebrate our 75th anniversary this year at The Cavaliers, we are reminded of the many special alumni who have played an important role in the corps success long after aging out. Some continue to give their time, treasure and talent to the Green Machine. One individual who has made a lasting impact and deserves to be recognized for his outstanding contributions to the corps is Dr Fred Olin.
Dr Olin marched in The Chicago Cavaliers from 1956-1958. He earned his DVM from the University of Illinois in 1961 and he earned his MD from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio in 1973. He also spent 2 years in the Army. He became an orthopedic surgeon and worked in private practice in San Antonio Texas from 1977 to 2006. He continued to first assist in surgeries until 2013.
Fred participated in the CAC 888 and really enjoyed performing with the alumni corps. He together with Dr Craig Bales and nurse Helen Turner founded the Cavalier Medical Group in the early 1990’s. He attended winter camps and summer rehearsals and provided on site orthopedic evaluations for at least 30 years. He has participated in several DCI San Antonio medical clinics and performed exams on DCI corps members. His diagnostic skills were excellent and he continues to provide orthopedic advice by phone when asked. He has given much to the corps over the years and continues to be a valued member of the Cavalier Medical Group.
Fred married his wife Sondra in 1961 and their first date was attending a Cavalier show. They were married for 56 years. His time with the Cavaliers was very important to him. He credits The Cavaliers for shaping him into a better man. His daughter Jennifer says his devotion to The Cavaliers is unwavering and that he bleeds green. I couldn’t agree more.
Fred has indeed left a legacy of changing the organization for the better, and he is most worthy of this prestigious award.
