Since graduating from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2013, Jesse Backes has been an active teacher, designer, and clinician around Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
Jesse has been a member of The Cavaliers’ percussion team since 2017 and is excited to extend his role as one of the battery coordinators for the 2019 season. Jesse has been the percussion specialist and battery arranger at Marian Catholic High School since 2013, and the percussion director and arranger at Lake Central High School since 2017.
He spent the summers of 2014 - 2016 as a percussion staff member at Phantom Regiment working as a snare drum technician and associate percussion caption head. He was also the battery coordinator with Green Thunder Percussion and Cavaliers Indoor percussion from 2012-18. From 2013-2018 he was the percussion director and arranger at Batavia High School and was at Northern Illinois University as a marching band instructor. Jesse has been an active clinician with high school programs around Chicago and Northwest Indiana including Neuqua Valley High School, Munster High School, Bloomington High School, and many others. He also adjudicates for the Illinois Music Educators Association.
As a performer, Jesse was a snare drummer with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from 2011-13. In 2011, he was a part of The Cavaliers Fred Sanford Award-winning percussion section. He spent his final season with The Cavaliers in the roles of both snare drum section leader and drum sergeant. Jesse finished his performing career with the corps as part of their clinic at the 2013 PAS International Convention. He also performed as a member of Green Thunder Percussion from 2007-09, Colts Drum Corps in 2010, and Gateway Indoor Percussion in 2011. Jesse has also performed at the Midwest clinic and internationally in Germany and the Czech Republic.
